Bayt Raqs Al Iraqi Pathway Program

A progressive Iraqi dance training program that builds a strong foundation in technique, music, rhythm, cultural context, and stylistic understanding. Each course builds on the previous one, allowing students to develop gradually rather than learning isolated movements without context.

Level 1 —Foundations

Students are introduced to the foundations of Raqs al-Kawleeya through technique, cultural context, music, rhythm, and a basic understanding of the style.

Part 1 Raqs Al Kawleeya

Building on Part 1, students expand their Raqs al-Kawleeya vocabulary while developing a deeper understanding of Iraqi music and rhythms. Introductory work in other Iraqi dance styles will also help students recognise differences in movement, context and musical character.

Part 2 Overview of Iraqi Dance Styles

Level 2 — Development

Students begin exploring Raqs al-Hacha’a with greater attention to technique, cultural context, rhythm, music, and the stylistic qualities that distinguish it from other Iraqi dance forms.

Part 1 Raqs Al Hacha’a

An introduction to Khashaba through its cultural setting, musical structure, rhythm, and movement vocabulary. Students continue developing their ability to connect what they hear in the music with how they move.

Part 2 Introduction to Khashaba

Level 3 — Advanced Practice & Performance

Level 3 becomes an ongoing performance and repertoire stream. Each term focuses on a different choreography, style, rhythm, or regional dance, with opportunities to revisit previous material at a deeper level and work with guest teachers, musicians, or choreographers.

The focus is on musical interpretation, stylistic accuracy, performance quality, improvisation, and developing a broader Iraqi dance repertoire.
